After the ruin, we had the cab driver drop us off into town so we could explore. Cars and people fight for space on narrow streets that have little or no sidewalks. A street grid that seems to have no thought or planning even to the unedited eye. Mismatch commercial stores display their wares, next to Doctor's offices, Internet cafe, restaurants and hotels. A dazzling feast for the senses as pedestrian chatter competes with car engines and street construction. In some insane way, it comes together like a symphony. We sweat under the heat of the day, yet neither of us wants to leave for air condition comfort. We circle in and out of stores, picking up snacks and water for the room. Everyone seems polite and always with a smile. I wonder if there is a direct correlation between income/social status and friendliness!
Starting to get hungry and we know the bar at the hotel will not be open until 3 pm. So we seek out a place to eat. As it seems to happen when you travel with an open mind and a good attitude, we find a cool expat restaurant where we both had rice, beans, pork, side of slaw, and a beer for $15 that included a 25% tip! No wonder many people from the States are retiring to Central America now that it has stabilized.
We hang out waiting for our meaI so I ask Bill what he thinks of the street life of the town. Oh, I think it is great, I knew nothing about Belize or even where it was before I came it and now I see how great the people are and how diverse is the country. Well, Bill if I can ever get you to turn on your computer, you would have seen all the stuff I sent you about each country we are visiting. Maybe, that can be a project to occupy your time back home, go to the library or hang out in Powell's and read the guidebooks and literature on the countries we visit. I hope the people who read this an have influence over Bill remind him to get out of the house and do some fun research. I think it is even better than having him read it on the computer. This way it gets him out of the house and he is not so isolated. Just a thought, I do not mean to sound preachy. We did have a good, healthy meal here is the photo and name of the place.
